"Event Horizon, a real classic which started my passion for this genre."
The Plot
The plot of this movie is around the mysterious reappearance of the space ship "Event Horizon", this ship was equipped with a government project, a machine allowing to create black holes thus bending the universe around itself.
To be honest, the plot itself sounds rather run of the mill, it is not really something new or revolutionary. I saw this movie over 9 years ago and when I found it in an old record store I just had to buy it. This movie made such an impression on me back then, I thought it would be nice to watch it again and review it.
The movie
Onced the "Event Horizon" has had been rediscovered, a crew specialized in salvaging space ships is sent out to recover and investigate what happened with the ship. After their own spaceship got damaged the crew was temporarily unable to leave the "Event Horizon", where for some reason not a trace of the original crew was be found...
The only reference to the crew was found in the captains video logs which only contained static noise and a short message;
"liberate tuta ex inferis"- Save yourself from hell.
This is when Dr Weir, one of the crew members, reveals a theory about the ship having traveled into another dimension of pure evil and chaos, where it maintained for seven years....
After this scene the tension increases, the crew becomes anxious and stops trusting each other. In addittion to that, they all start to dream about certain violent/traumatic events they once witnessed.
The overall feeling becomes more aggressive and violent, accompanied by the disappearance of certain crew members, creating a grim setting.
Eventually the surviving crew rigged the Event Horizon with explosives and uses their own ship to get to a safe distance. This is done while the obsessed Dr. Weir is trying to make the Event Horizon go back to its previous dimension, taking all crew members with it.
At that moment the salvage ship was out of the blast zone, the crew's captain which was still aboard the Event Horizon, sacrifices himself, by blowing up the Event Horizon making it disappear into yet another dimension.
The Conclusion
Off course the movie itself does not offer you the same special effects as the movies we see nowadays do, nevertheless the way the movie was shot and the way it builds up tension make it a must see for anyone who enjoys a vintage-futuristic sci-fi thriller.
Hi Jamie,
ReplyDeleteThanks for your description. Although I'm not much of a sci-fi movie fan, you've convinced me that this movie is one to watch!
There are only minor mistakes. Hope you don't get off course...;-)
